November 2021: Co-signing Occupational Therapist Assistants' Documentation

QuestionAm I required to co-sign the occupational therapist assistant's (OTA) documentation?

Answer: No. However, an occupational therapist must review their OTA's documentation as part of the communication and supervision plan. Depending on the practice setting and the client population, the occupational therapist can determine what frequency of review is appropriate.

As the supervising occupational therapist, you are expected to document in the client record confirming that you have read the OTA's notes.

For more information, see the Standards for the Supervision of Occupational Therapist Assistants.
