The College has received notification from the Ministry of Health that the proposed regulation for performance of the controlled act of psychotherapy by occupational therapists is now posted on the regulatory registry and open for comment. Comments are due by November 26, 2019.
Beginning December 31, 2019, only physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, psychotherapists and social workers and social service workers who are authorized by their respective regulatory College will be able to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy.
The College is proposing a new regulation to be made under the
Occupational Therapy Act, 1991. The regulation would allow occupational therapists to continue to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy after December 31, 2019 if they meet the conditions of the regulation.
As required by law, the proposed regulation was circulated for 60 days to members and stakeholders for comment (April - June, 2018). Feedback was then reviewed by College Council at its June 2018 meeting and the proposed regulation was approved for submission to the Ministry. The proposed regulation was submitted to the Ministry in July 2018.
