The Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC) recently released a succession planning resource for health information custodians (HIC).
Health information custodians have obligations under the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA) to ensure personal health information in their custody or control is protected against privacy breaches – that includes planning for a change in practice and creating a succession plan to prevent abandoned records.
You can learn more and see the IPC’s best practises by accessing their fact sheet: Succession Planning to Help Prevent Abandoned Records
The College’s May 2019 Case of Month also addresses this topic, see: Case Study - Succession Planning for Client Records
For more information, see the IPC document: Avoiding Abandoned Health Records: Guidance for Health Information Custodians
If you have any questions or concerns about abandoned records or the duties and obligations of custodians, please contact the IPC at [email protected] or 1.800.387.0073
