Use of Title Psychotherapist

In December, the controlled act of psychotherapy was proclaimed. Proclamation means Ontario OTs are once again permitted to use the restricted title “psychotherapist” as long as they also identify themselves orally and in writing as an occupational therapist.

When using the title “psychotherapist”, OTs are responsible for making sure people understand they are accountable to the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario.

Occupational therapists wishing to use the title “psychotherapist” must meet the requirements outlined in the Standards for Use of Title Psychotherapist. To learn about the requirements, view the Standards for Use of Title Psychotherapist.

Reminder: If you are practising psychotherapy, you must comply with the Standards for Psychotherapy regardless of whether you are performing the controlled act of psychotherapy or not. Only OTs who meet the requirements outlined in the Standards for Psychotherapy are permitted to practice psychotherapy and use the title “psychotherapist”.
