The new Standards for Use of Title will come into effect January 1, 2018 and replace the
Guide to Use of Title.
In Ontario, only registrants of the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario are permitted to use the title “occupational therapist”, the designation “OT Reg. (Ont.)” or any variation, abbreviation or equivalent in another language.
The new Standards reflect key changes to the College position on use of title and provide additional information on specific topics including:
- Use of additional credentials, earned through professional development or continuing education, that meet specific criteria defined in the Standards.
- Revision of the preferred language to be used when an OT is communicating a specific area of practice
- Use of title in retirement or upon resignation from the College.
The transition of the document from a Guide to Standards reflects the
importance of accurate use of title in the interest of public protection. Practice Standards define the minimum expectations for OT practice in Ontario.
Review the new Standards for Use of Title and the Quick Reference to Use of Title to make sure you know how to represent your registration, training and experience as an occupational therapist.
