What You Need to Know About Professional Liability Insurance (PLI)
- Professional liability insurance is a primary public protection measure that is set out in legislation and regulation, and is required to be enforced by the College.
- As an occupational therapist (OT), you must carry PLI that meets the College’s requirements, even you are not practising or in a non-clinical role.
- The College’s PLI requirements recently changed and you are now required to carry five years of extended coverage to cover claims which are made and reported after you cease practising and are no longer registered with the College.
- The College has confirmed that the insurance coverage offered (as of August 1, 2017) by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT), the Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists (OSOT) and Aon Healthcare Advantage meets the College requirements.
- Each year, when you purchase your insurance, you must update the following information online within 30 days of the policy expiration date: insurer name, start date, expiry date and certificate/policy number.
- If there is a change in your PLI coverage at any time, you must make the update online within 30 days of the change occurring.
- OTs found without PLI may have their registration revoked.
- OTs who renew their insurance late, or fail to update their insurance information online within the specified timeframe may be subject to an administrative fee of $100 + HST and/or other formal action from the College. This fee will be imposed as a cost-recovery measure to address resources expended to follow up with OTs who are non-compliant.
- Professional liability protects you and your clients. Carrying professional liability insurance is a requirement of registration. To learn more, please visit the Professional Liability Insurance page in the Registrant Services section of our website.
