Bylaw Amendments & the Protecting Patients Act, 2017
The College received 500 responses to the March to May 2017 consultation on proposed bylaw amendments. Some of the proposed revisions were in response to the public demand for greater transparency and accountability. Revisions were also consistent with government requirements for transparency and certain proposals in the Protecting Patients Act, 2017, formerly known as Bill 87.
Council carefully considered the reasons for the proposed amendments and the concerns expressed through the consultation. Significant changes were made to some of the language initially proposed and Council subsequently passed all bylaw amendments.
Other health regulatory Colleges in Ontario are implementing similar changes or have already done so. Learn more about how these changes affect OTs by reviewing the Key Bylaw Changes update.
Appointment of Non-Council Committee Members
The College received a tremendous response to its call for OTs to serve as Non-Council Committee members. Thank you to all who took the time to submit their information. At the June meeting, Council appointed five successful applicants to the College’s statutory committees with terms beginning July 1, 2017. Learn more about the work of Council.
Guidelines - Medical Assistance in Dying
Interim Guidelines for Medical Assistance in Dying were approved by Council in June 2016. The Guidelines have been revised to reflect legislative changes and feedback related to cognitive and capacity assessment (section 4). The reference to ‘Interim’ has now been removed.
The Interim Guidelines for Medical Assistance in Dying will be in effect until the release of the revised Guidelines later this summer. Interim Guidelines are available online under Standards and Resources.
