Question: I live in a smaller community and work as the only occupational therapist at the primary health team clinic. Sometimes I am asked to see a client I know in the community.

What should I do if this conflict of interest is unavoidable?

Answer: The Standard for the Prevention and Management of Conflicts of Interest outlines the expectations when an occupational therapist is unable to avoid a conflict of interest.

Performance indicator 2.7 states:

If avoiding a conflict of interest is not possible, manage it by taking these steps:

  1. Discuss the conflict of interest with the client, other professionals, partners, and interested parties before providing services.
  2. Advise the client of their right to decline services at any time and, if possible, suggest alternatives.
  3. Document in the client record the steps taken to address the conflict.
