ACOTRO is the national organization of occupational therapy regulators in Canada. They are seeking an occupational therapist to join their Competency Assessor team.
Competency Assessor
All internationally educated occupational therapists (“IEOTs”) who wish to work as an occupational therapist in Canada must first complete the Substantial Equivalency Assessment System(“SEAS”)
program. SEAS is a single, centralized process for the assessment of educational qualifications and competencies of IEOTs. SEAS determines whether the education and competencies of IEOTs are substantially equivalent to Canadian-educated occupational therapists.
The SEAS Competency Assessors conduct interview-style competency assessments with IEOTs and prepare necessary competency reports.
- Assessments comprise an estimated 6.5-hour one-on-one interview, along with some preparatory activities and post-assessment
reporting.
- Currently the assessments are being conducted remotely.
- Assessors typically complete 1–4 assessments per month, or more depending on need.
The successful candidate will be provided with in-depth training. The assessors are also supported by the SEAS staff, a variety of resources and competency assessment development.
Position Qualifications
All assessors must meet the following qualifications:
- have practiced as an occupational therapist in Canada for a minimum of seven years.
- hold seven years unrestricted OT registration in Canada.
- hold a current certificate of registration with the college in their jurisdiction with no terms, limits or conditions.
- have no prior history with a regulatory body that resulted in a decision made by the regulatory body or representing committee other than a decision to take no action.
- be current with provincial regulatory College's quality assurance/continuing competence requirements.
Required Skills
All Competency Assessment Assessors will demonstrate:
- exceptional interviewing and assessment skills
- ability to follow a standardized process
- solid understanding of professional standards of practice and applicable legislation and regulations
- exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- extensive experience in report-writing
- solid understanding of principles of fairness, impartiality, objectivity and transparency
- solid skills in critical thinking, objective non-biased reasoning and applying standard criteria
- attention to detail and analytical skills
- asset – experience in a variety of OT areas (e.g. – geriatrics, mental health, etc.)
- asset – experience working with new graduates (e.g. – placement supervisor, team lead)
